In the Tibetan highlands, water is always in short supply. People don't have the habit to take showers regularly. Historically, farmers and nomads were only entitled to three showers in their life -- one at birth, one before their wedding, and one at death. The situation today is far better these days, however, the habit of not taking showers regularly still exists, and it constantly leads to skin diseases. Teaching the kids to build better sanitizing habits, including basic skincare, is part of our mission. Additionally, one of the common diseases and leading cause of death in that region is hydatidosis (also called Echinococcosis and hydatid disease), which comes from unboiled water and improperly sanitized food. Tapeworms of the Echinococcus will infect the body, leading the symptoms that can last for over a year. If diagnosed late, surgery is expensive. That is why a basic health check-up is nessecary, since it can help discover the disease early, and it will keep the patient healthy and save the patient money.
With the generous support of our donors, we were able to provide every single student and teacher with health examinations, including eyesight tests and ultrasound imaging. We discovered five cases of hydatid disease in the kids as well as Hepatitis B in 40% of the children. We are current working with the teaching staff about how to treat each case.
A pair of sunglasses. A plastic frame with a polycarbonate lens is all a kid will need to have adequate defense from photokeratitis, commonly known as snow-blindness, where the eyes are exposed to UV rays without sufficient protection. Due to the high level UV exposure in the highland (where we are going is about 3000 meters above sea), people will lose eye sight at an age as early as 25. Into their 30's, they will start to develop cataracts. Results from a survey study organized in 2003 show that blindness and eye diseases are more prominent in Tibet than in any other areas in Eastern China. With kind support of Guangdong local sunglass maker, we can purchase a pair of child FDA approved sunglass for $2, and prevent a Tibetan child from contracting snow-blindness and other similar conditions.
See Love Heal was able to provide every child with a pair of 100% UV protection sunglasses, along with personalized thermal water bottles to ensure their hydration and allow them to have warmer drinks in the cooler months.
For this project, we will travel to an educational institute called 窝赛乡小学 (wo sai xiang school) near the town of 大日 (da ri) in the province of 青海省 (Qing Hai province). This institution lacks the proper resources and funding to be able to provide the children equal opportunities as the rest of the world. Along with educational supplies and clothing items, we will raise money to provide medical resources along with a certified doctor to perform health check-ups on the children.
